The Dutch water distribution system is well known as a role model when it comes to water resource management. The optimal response in the analysis and timely tracking to the slightest hint of damage increase is undoubtedly one of its pillars to host this position. As a prime indicator, pipe failure frequency provides a valuable message to water companies to implement better practices and support asset management field in making distribution systems more sustainable. Recent studies performed by The Watercycle Research Institute (KWR) evidence the possible effect of external factors in the increase the pipe failure rate, which has had an important impact on asset management. The limited studies on the impact of trees on water distribution systems leave a high degree of uncertainty, and it is suspected that they may be the cause of the 30% that is still unknown in the region. This study proposes to assess the influence of trees by applying data mining techniques, based on historical data from Dutch water companies. The influence of trees on pipe failures is associated from a biological point of view, and their impact is revealed from a computer science approach.
